Pilot Study: Perceptions of Alcohol Use Among UMR Students

Students at UMR use alcohol to varying degrees, but their experience with alcohol culture is varied among the student populace. In order to see the interaction between our alcohol policy and alcohol culture on campus qualitative research is required. We started by learning as much about qualitative research as possible. Next, we developed an interview guide and interviewed three anonymous students about our research question. Finally, we transcribed, codified, analyzed our interviews, and gained meaningful insights. The reported normal distribution of alcohol use among students at UMR lends statistical validity to our data. Our findings show that the lack of awareness towards the alcohol policy, UMR students perceiving most students drink but do so responsibly, and unrealistic expectations primarily in freshman year As this is only a primary study, we recommend using further qualitative study methods to sample a larger portion of the student populace. This may yield new results, clarify current findings, and find possible sources for the perceptions of alcohol use prior mentioned. In conclusion, the perspectives on alcohol culture at UMR varies throughout the student populations. Unawareness, social aspects, and expectations are core factors that influence the students' perspectives on alcohol culture and the alcohol policy that is in place at UMR.
