Exploring Technologies to Enhance and Improve the Lives of Blind People

Humans experience the world through their five sense organs, but the most fundamental sense organ that is the basis and beauty of all life experiences are the eyes. Blind people do not experience and see the world as other people do. As of now, the World Health Organization estimates that there are 285 million people who are visually impaired and amongst those 39 million are blind. Therefore, there is a need to develop devices to enhance their lives and to make them more independent. Thus, I researched and experimented with building a basic prototype that uses pre-trained neural networks models and a camera to classify images of things in the field of view into different categories to help the blind person know what is around. This is just an important step towards enabling blind people to be more independent,.This prototype will need to be improved with a more sophisticated design to make it useful in practice. Hopefully, in the future, there can be further research in this area to come up with prototypes that have better models to classify a larger variety of images into specific objects and groups for that blind person to identify and work with. Moreover, there’s also the possibility of adding an audio component to the prototype so that the recognized object’s information could be relayed to the blind person through speech.
