Surgical Site Infections in Adults Receiving Cervical Epidural Steroid Injections

Recent studies suggest preoperative cervical epidural steroid injections (ESIs) increase the risk of postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs). The aim of this systematic review and meta- analysis is to determine the association between SSIs in adults receiving ESI vs. no ESI prior to cervical spine decompression or fusion surgery. The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis suggest ESIs do not increase the risk of SSIs following cervical spine decompression or fusion surgery. However, older adults may be at an increased risk of an SSI following anterior or posterior fusion surgery.
