Analysis Methods Evaluating VR Perspective-Taking for Couple's Conflict Resolution

Methods of resolving conflict are highly sought for in establishing successful interpersonal relationships. In the field of HCI, traditional approaches of video-based perspective-taking reflection for resolving conflict have been frequently tested and evaluated. However, the intersection of perspective-taking measures with virtual reality remains widely unexplored. In this study, we explore the VR-based system of Retrospective Embodied Perspective-Taking (REPT) and conduct a mixed-methods approach to measuring its effectiveness on conflict resolving factors. Our findings report that REPT did not show significant improvements in numeric nor contextual analysis methods for improving empathic accuracy. However, REPT did show substantial evidence of improving various aspects of communication and positive factors during conflict resolution. Using this knowledge, we suggest future adaptations for REPT systems and other potential analysis methods to gauge its effectiveness.
