“An arrangement in a system to pointing”: Reading Strategies for Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons

Tender Buttons, a book of poetry written by Gertrude Stein in 1914, is often described as unintelligible and bereft of meaning within both academic and hobbyist circles. Our research seeks to prove otherwise. We have come to interpretational conclusions around some passages, but believe it to be more effective to demonstrate these conclusions by demonstrating our methodology – our reading strategies – on selected passages from the work itself. Within this poster, we will present context about the book, its author, and our interpretational results. We will be primarily focused on demonstrating to nonexpert symposium attendees how our reading strategies make the existence of interpretational outcomes clear by encouraging them to apply the strategies to example passages themselves.
