Nonpharmaceutical Interventions by US States during COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 was a disease of serious influence on society and life in all nations around the world. Legislative action to protect our nations were put into action which included nonpharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing and stay at home orders. These strategies led to positive outcomes including a flattened curve in relation to daily incidence, but the true effectiveness of the nonpharmaceutical interventions still seems vague to the public today.Through data collection of dates, incidences of cases and deaths biweekly, and during and after the stay at home, we should find decreased morbidity and mortality cases for those states that intervened early and sustained the stay at home order. The data together shows there is strong association between early and sustained implementation for mitigating temporal effects of mortality and morbidity. However, confounding factors such as the difference in population density between states affected the temporal effects significantly, such as New Jersey which did sustain and implement the stay at home order early, but still suffered horrible outcomes early on. More research needs to be done to prepare effect nonpharmaceutical interventions for every state, while determining tradeoffs that would ethically allow this country's schools, businesses, and people to live realistically.
