How does UROP work?
After you find a student who is interested in working on a research project with you, the student can apply for a UROP award to get a stipend and funding for the project.
Review the mentor guidelines and where to access the recommendation forms you will need to fill out students applying to UROP for funding. For tips on mentoring undergrad students, click here.
Applying for UROP
Only students seeking UROP funding need to submit an application. Faculty mentors are advised to assist with the funding application and they’re required to review it at least once before submission.
Mentors must complete and submit a Faculty Recommendation Form by 11:59 p.m. of the application deadline.
Faculty Mentor Deadlines
UROP has two firm deadlines each year, one in early October for Spring semester projects and one in late February for either a summer or Fall semester project. UROP mentors must submit the Faculty Mentor Recommendation Form through the UROP online by the deadline in order for the student’s application to be considered. Faculty members interested in mentoring more than one or two students in a round must consider the possibility that with limited funding, awards may be limited to the top 2 or 3 students.
Upcoming UROP Deadlines
- Fall 2018: Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.
- Summer 2018: Monday, February 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.
UROP projects can either be based on student ideas or a part of a faculty mentor's larger project. The mentor should guide the student through the application process including making sure that the student understands the larger project if it is the mentor's project. The mentor should read and critique a draft of the proposal which must be written by the student.
If the project requires permissions for IRB, IACUC or the use of controlled substances, the mentor should guide the student through the required steps to obtain permission. This includes officially adding the student to the mentor's existing IRB or IACUC protocol.
Faculty Mentor Recommendation Form
UROP mentors must submit the Faculty Mentor Recommendation Form through the UROP website by the deadline in order for the student’s application to be considered. Submit the UROP Faculty Mentor Recommendation Form.
Upon Project Completion
At the completion of the project, the faculty mentor is expected to help the student determine the most appropriate venue for the required public presentation. For local presentations, mentors are expected to be there to support the student presenter. Mentors must fill out and sign the Verification of Completion form for each student.
